Mission San Luis Voted Among the Best in the Country

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. –

Secretary of State Cord Byrd announced that Mission San Luis placed in the top ten for best Open-Air Museum in the country as part of the USA TODAY 10BEST.  Mission San Luis ranked seventh out of 20 similar museums.  The only Open-Air Museum in Florida to place in the top ten, Mission San Luis is listed as one of the America250FL 14th Colony Heritage Sites.

“As our nation reflects on 250 years of independence, it is also fitting that we honor the centuries of history that preceded it,” said Secretary of State Cord Byrd.  “Visit Mission San Luis to rediscover the legacy of the Apalachee and Spanish people who shaped this land over three centuries ago.  Our team of living history interpreters are proud to preserve these stories, offering a first-class educational experience that brings our shared past to life.”

Mission San Luis is Tallahassee’s only National Historic Landmark, offering 60 acres of green space; historic gardens; and six recreated historical buildings to explore, including a Franciscan church, a Spanish house, palisaded fort, a blacksmith shop, and the largest reconstructed Apalachee council house in the Southeast.

Knowledge of life at Mission San Luis comes from archaeological and historical research and the grounds are the most thoroughly investigated mission in the southeastern United States. Interpreters in period wardrobe teach visitors about the life of the Apalachee and Spanish people who lived here from 1656 to 1704.  To learn more about Mission San Luis visit the website, MissionSanLuis.org.
